Commissioning

Effective commissioning is becoming an ever more important part of the social care system.

Procuring cost-effective and high-quality service provision from a range of providers is vital to ensure a sustainable service model that delivers positive outcomes for service users.

Paul Robertson
Hello, my name is Paul and I work as a Provider Quality Officer within the Commissioning Team. I have worked for Reading for almost seven years and as a Provider Quality Officer for the last two years. As part of my role, I am privileged to work with amazing colleagues within the council and with many partner agencies and care providers to ensure that the care delivered to the people of Reading is done so in line with the Council's contractual requirements, legislation and best practice Industry standards. Working for Reading is a fantastic opportunity, especially as I have grown up in the town and take great pride in working to support the people who live around me. The Council offers great career opportunities to enable me to learn, develop and progress and the TEAM Reading approach really does enable us to work together to ensure people's independence is maximised and that those who need care receive the right support.

Our Commissioning team are made up of colleagues from all sorts of professional backgrounds. Have a look at our team structure.

People often move from within the sector – perhaps starting out in the direct delivery of social care services before moving into commissioning work. But there are also opportunities for people with transferable skills who come from other sectors. Good organisational and project management abilities are essential attributes, and procurement or contract management knowledge gained in other sectors is often equally as applicable to our work.

Our team tell us that they value the flexibility on offer. And that when this is considered alongside the positive team culture, it adds up to a compelling offer. The diversity of our work means that there is plenty of opportunity to move around within the team, enabling to you to work in different specialist areas. You’ll be encouraged to try new things and you might uncover some talents that you didn’t know you had.

It's a professional area where there is appetite for innovation. We are always exploring new ways of working and new models of delivery, while managing risks carefully.

It’s an ideal opportunity for those who want to work on the most current initiatives within the social care sector.
