There's MORE to Reading

More to Offer

We recognise that our staff put a lot into their work. That’s why we want to make sure they get plenty back in return.

Remuneration is an important part of this and we offer some of most competitive salary packages in the Berkshire region. But this only part of the picture. We pay attention to the little things that come together to make a big difference.

There is a genuine commitment to work / life balance and an open-minded approach to flexible working. We recognise that people lead busy lives in and outside of work and getting the balance right between these is essential for people to flourish in all aspects of their lives.

Colleagues tell us that they feel valued as individuals and as professionals – that their managers are attentive to them, their wellbeing and their professional development. It isn’t just written in a policy document. We live and breathe it every day.

Because staff feel supported in their work it gives them confidence to step outside of their comfort zones – to try new approaches and test different ways of working. Reading is the perfect place to develop your skills because of the diversity of cases that we work on. You will get the opportunity to see every form of practice in Reading.

Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to do the job you trained for. We value what you do, and the personal and unique contribution that you offer.

Jemma Shuttleworth
“Hello, my name is Jemma and I’ve been part of the Reading adult social care team since 2010. I first joined in 2010 as a care assistant and progressed through my career as an unqualified team member, but one who had gained a lot of experience of working with people and understanding what it takes to become a Social Worker. In 2020 I was successful in securing a place on the Social Work degree apprenticeship programme offered by Reading Borough Council and I went on to complete three years of studying at university until I qualified in 2023. I have been given a lot of opportunity to develop different skills and have always been encouraged to learn within the authority. I have a real passion for working with people and what I like about Reading is the diversity of the work we undertake, with no two pieces of work being the same. I have built up great relationships with my colleagues, some of whom I have worked with since I started with Reading which is testament to the supportive culture of the authority. I am always able to seek out a listening ear or guidance if needed and I have never been made to feel alone. I foresee my career continuing to progress within Reading and I am sure that my colleagues will support my growth in whatever way that takes me.”
